MY JOURNEY WITH CLAY

Meet bENNIE
The first time I got stuck into a lump of clay, I was in high school. And with a gnawing urge to go out into the world and create, I studied art at the University of Stellenbosch, majoring in Graphic Design. For many years, I worked in the advertising industry and went on to run my own Graphic Design Studio for 15 years.
After years of life in Cape Town, I decided to make a move to the greener pastures of the Overberg. A remote piece of land between Caledon and Riviersonderend became my new domain to create, and in 2019, I opened a ceramic studio on the farm.
These days, instead of clicking and typing, I shape and work clay into sculpture, and have rediscovered the joys of fundamental making.
THE CERAMICS
I mainly work in stoneware and porcelain creating wheel thrown pieces, but I am continuously experimenting with various techniques and collections. My work explores both symmetrical and organic forms, classic vessels and contemporary pieces. I don’t subscribe to a specific aesthetic, but instead allow my pieces to follow my curiosity and am led by the clay.
COMMISSIONS
In addition to selling my pieces from the Studio, I do take on commissions. Let’s chat about creating a tableware range for your restaurant, or creating a one-of-a-kind gift for someone special.
